Valley Fire was a wildfire that burned 9,904 acres in the Boise Foothills, Idaho on October 4, 2024, and it took nearly 3 weeks to fully contain it. It was burning not too far from my place and I was there to photograph for a future painting. Thankfully, no property or lives have been lost as the fire was pushed from the city to the mountain wilderness.

My memories of quail hunting with experienced friends and a dog named Rocky. Actually, the dog was not there, but he is a legit trained hunting dog and I wished to show him. I asked my friends to take off their orange blaze jackets for this painting - that color is understandably too unnaturally bright for what I wanted to depict.

Overall, this painting is something new for me. One may call it a Modern Western and I tend to agree with that. What matters is, I've felt an enormous satisfaction painting the age-old subject and will return to it more in the future.

The painting depicts an uncommon So Cal phenomenon - a summer morning lightning in a sky. Can you see it? That day it drizzled a little bit and artists were gifted a few fantastic lightning flashes to paint. I was working under a bridge with a group and do not know if anybody else have seen it, but I immediately layed it on my panel. Also, LA River itself is quite fascinating, too. I still can't wrap my head around a millenia-old innovation of concrete canals and particularly how the normal vegetation is growing on it.

A midday plein air painting of a gate to the local Japanese Tea House. I love the sunlight dancing on the ground and the roots of a foreground tree, I did not want to paint just the entrance hence I picked this angle to make it feel like you are peeping out.

A short plein air study back from December 2021, when I spent some time in one of my favorite towns in USA. I stood on a road in the midst of a vast windy field, and had to wrap up things pretty quickly because of the chill. The bridge follows the road to the St. Mary's University.

Beside; Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, Zvenigorod, Russia

“Nearing the end of the day I visited Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, a regional wonder, established in 1398. Located near my birth town Zvenigorod, this historic landmark stands proud on a hill which overlook broad sunny valleys and ancient Slavic forests. Moscow River flows just south from the monastery stronghold allowing this holy site to serve as both a defensive military picket and a point of pilgrimage.

As I set up my French easel and began painting, daily worship was near its end. Priests and believers rushed to finish their prayers and duties for the day. I believe I went unnoticed as I chased the light and captured antiquity.”
