My memories of quail hunting with experienced friends and a dog named Rocky. Actually, the dog was not there, but he is a legit trained hunting dog and I wished to show him. I asked my friends to take off their orange blaze jackets for this painting - that color is understandably too unnaturally bright for what I wanted to depict.

Overall, this painting is something new for me. One may call it a Modern Western and I tend to agree with that. What matters is, I've felt an enormous satisfaction painting the age-old subject and will return to it more in the future.

A couple of weeks before spring's warmth began to stir, I started this painting. I was new to the area, having just finished three grueling weeks at the Fire Academy. That time feels distant now, and I find myself yearning for another winter, one that always seems to arrive too slowly.

The painting depicts an uncommon So Cal phenomenon - a summer morning lightning in a sky. Can you see it? That day it drizzled a little bit and artists were gifted a few fantastic lightning flashes to paint. I was working under a bridge with a group and do not know if anybody else have seen it, but I immediately layed it on my panel. Also, LA River itself is quite fascinating, too. I still can't wrap my head around a millenia-old innovation of concrete canals and particularly how the normal vegetation is growing on it.
